Mental Health First Aid - Basic Level

The event will be held in person over two days: Monday Sept 12 and Monday Sept 19th. Attendance is required at both days to complete this course.
 

Deborah Romeyn, RMT will be presenting Mental Health First Aid – Basic. A 12-hour course in which participants will learn how to provide initial help to people who are showing signs of a mental health problems or experiencing a mental health crisis.

As massage therapists we spend a lot of time alone with our clients and they often reveal personal and emotional information to us. It is essential that we are equipped to manage a crisis. 

The philosophy behind this training is that mental health crisis, such as suicidal and self-harming actions, may be avoided through early intervention.
If a crisis does arise, then members of the public can take action that may reduce the harm that could result.

In the Basic course, the following mental health problems are covered:
·    Mood disorders
·    Anxiety disorders
·    Psychosis
·    Substance Use Disorder

MTAM Practicing/Non-Practicing/Retired/Student Members: $219 + GST
Non-Members: $259 + GST

Fee includes course textbook and handouts. 

*No lunch will be provided. There are numerous food service options in the area. Participants may use the fridge and microwave if they choose to bring their own lunch.

Self Employment Tips: Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me Before I Started

  • Basic set up for sole proprietors: do I need to charge GST? Should I incorporate? Do I need to register a business name?
  • Goal setting: what am I trying to achieve?
  • Workflow: keeping things organized
  • Income & Expenses: managing both and cash flow 
  • Accounting: keeping track, balancing and recording sales and cash receipts, and budgeting.
  • Taxes: CRA basics, what can self-employed RMTs write off? 
  • Insurance: and other risk considerations
AND any other questions you have! This course is for new and long-time self-employed RMT’S who could use the refresher.

Levelling up the Language of Massage

Join the entire Research Committee, in a collaborative presentation, where we examine the CrowdScience BBC podcast “What are the Health Benefits of Massage.”

We will look at terms like “knots” and the idea that massage flushes out toxins and lactic acid, as well as delving into the research of what is really happening on a cellular level.

We will also discuss the importance of educating our clients on better terminology and discuss how some of the language we use can be misleading or even detrimental to our clients.

Vodder Manual Lymphatic Drainage Level 1 Practical

Join Denise Drisdelle BA, RMT for this 4-day, October 13th - 16th, classroom course that covers the original Dr. Vodder Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) strokes and their application to each body part, including the neck, face, arms, legs, nape, back, buttocks, chest and abdomen. These techniques can be applied to many conditions, for example, a sprained ankle on day 1 of injury, skin conditions like acne, sinus congestion, digestive issues, acute injuries, MVAs and concussions. 

 Through careful, systematic training of your hands, and thorough training in the scientific basis of lymphology, you will gain all the skills necessary to excel in this work. Learning outcomes for the theoretical portion covers the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system, effects of MLD, connective tissues, lymphedema and edema and contraindications. 

**Prior to taking this course you will need to complete the Level One Theory. Register for the theory portion directly though the Vodder School. Email Vodder School at info@vodderschool.com to register for the online course. An additional course fee of $150 + GST will apply.

Sara Bohunicky is backShe has completed her multi year study and will be presenting the final results of her study Myofascial release of the pectoral fascia: Effect on shoulder posture, pectoral length, muscle activity, and movement performance.

Mylena Medeiros, PT will discuss a new innovation in the treatment of neuromotor disorders called the Therasuit. The Therasuit, (which was created by NASA!) works as an intensive individualized physical active training which accelerates functional progress for children/youth with neuromotor disorders. 

Our final speaker is Dr. Katinka Stecina a neuroscience researcher will present Neuroscience for therapists: neurons, posture and training.

Join Sheila Bergman for this science-based discussion on Massage Therapy & the Immune System.

Massage therapy and the Immune System is a workshop developed to educate massage therapists on best practices while working with clients. It is designed to be a review of how the immune system of the body works, and how best to assist in its function.
By taking this workshop, you should develop an understanding of what Innate and Specific Immunity are and how they work in protecting the body from disease. You will develop an understanding of cells involved and how they perform their function and the effect of stress on the immune system. You will learn about personal and public health as well as understand the role a massage therapist has in the protection of public health.
