The MTAM requires all of its members to adhere to a formal complaints and discipline policy when they register as members. The process begins with a requirement for written complaint to be filed with the association and is followed by investigation and action if required.
Since the MTAM only represents its members (85% of the professional massage therapists in Manitoba) it can only investigate complaints about them. Since the Province of Manitoba does not at this time have legislation governing Massage Therapy, some unqualified and unisured individuals can practice with no public protection of a formal complaints & discipline process.
The MTAM feels this is a definite weakness in the profession and places the citizens of Manitoba at risk from time to time. Always check to see if your Massage Therapist is a member of the MTAM for your greatest level of protection.
If you have general complaints about the profession or a specific treatment, the MTAM office may be able to advise you of a course of action to follow. Each complaint is handled on a case by case basis and with complete confidentiality.
Details on the MTAM Complaint & Discipline process are available below in electronic format.
