As a health-care profession, Massage Therapy is
based upon the Health Sciences. Graduates from a
Massage Therapy school complete studies in:
Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Kinesiology,
Massage Theory and techniques, and assessment
and treatment of various conditions. This
intensive training ensures the confidence of the
public and other health-care professionals in
the abilities of MTAM members. Secondary
Education pre-requisites are required for entry
to the study of Massage Therapy.
Without adequate training, errors may occur in
choice of treatment method, resulting in injury,
pain, bruising or inflammation; or initial
conditions may be exacerbated, possibly becoming
chronic or disabling due to unrecognized
contraindications.
Since the mid 1990's the MTAM members have participated in a 'Compulsory' Continuing Education program. The program is designed on a 2 year cycle for each member. Based upon their graduation year the member is assigned to a particular cycle. Each member must achieve 16 Primary Credits and 8 Secondary Credits for each cycle. If they do not achieve this level of continuing cometency they are not allowed to remain members of the MTAM. The policy document guiding the program is available below:
